OTV of the SF AIDS Walk 2006

Aidswalk

With all this talk about AIDS, I'm inspired to do my part and raise money for those who are affected by this disease. As we all may know to well, AIDS is killing us.  I personally know of 7 people to fall to AIDS.  One of which just died 2 weeks ago and the first of which died in 1990.

Needless to say, we need to keep the dialog of AIDS in our community and we need to ACT beyond verbal masturbation.

So as a needed result DPizM will be in effect July 16th, 2006 in SF at the Golden Gate Park.  I registered a team "OTV-7134" for those who are near and want to join me (hint) during the SF AIDS Walk itself.  And if you can't make it, you can donate to DPM and or the "OTV SF AIDS Walk Team" on line.

This silently happens in our Black communities way too much for my liking....
Please keep an eye out and spread the word.

Are Pit Bulls Black?

Pitt Bulls & thier Parallels with Black People

I’ve always been a believer that the breed and personality of a dog can reflect the essence of their owner.  Additionally, dogs don’t just compliment image, they can also be a practical component to your environment or lifestyle. Furthermore my philosophy is a dog can’t eat (in my house) for free. Basically, “do something”: bark, patrol, retrieve a duck, win a race, find somebody, chase cats, rats or detour raccoons and robbers…something.  This is how I see dogs.  Plus where I come from the Bichon Frise wasn’t too popular and the homes in my hoodBrwon_pit_1 didn’t exude the elegance of Afghans and it's easy to see why.

On that note, I grew up in an exotic part of the western hemisphere that was more heard of than visited. The environment consisted of trees, concrete, broken glass and steel.  To say the least, if you lived in Oakland, versatility in your dog was a plus. And from what I learned and witnessed, the "practical" dog of choice was the ghetto bred Pit Bull…

Women and Modesty

_40268409_ameena203What Islam can teach us

Another day at the bus stop and another array of scantily clad women, and questionable choices in make-up and hair-dos.  I shake my head.

I walk further down the street and notice a cluster of Moslem women in Hijab (scarf) and I smile.  I smile because not only are they dressed in a way that honors their faith, they are dressing in a way that honors them. Now I will probably get my share of naysayers in the crowd but I see this as refreshing and a pleasant departure of the flagrant slide into semi whoredom of some women.  Let me preface this by saying how you dress is a choice and it says something about "you".  There should be some freedom in selection of course.  However the line must be drawn somewhere and who is drawing it?...

The Baby's Mama: Friend or Foe?

In this world of language where expression is so slippery that you have to be articulate and possess the ability to elaborate in order to communicate or just to get your point across, unfortunately, all I have to do is say "My Baby's Mama" and any 9 out of 10 Brothas will instantly feel me.

Why is this?  Because it's real.

As if the Bush agenda, police, economy, or even the price of gas weren't enough, I gotta wake up every day and brace myself for the next bullet of her actions.

Just today when I questioned my son at soccer practice why he didn't follow my instructions and call me every evening after he completed his homework, he simply answered, "You gotta talk to my mother about that."

Knowing my son, I knew that these weren't his words--they were the words of his mother.

Being that it was just a matter of minutes before his mother picked him up, it was it not the time and place go there with him about the importance of our communication, I just had to stand there and take the emotional bullet he--unknowingly--just delivered to my chest.

Amidst these days of times where co-parenting from separate households is just as common as Kanye West in the top 10, why must we make raising our children that much more difficult?

As much as I love son, I fight the urge to hate his mother.  To this day, he is the best and worst thing to ever happen to me.

The best being him.

The worst being the relationship with his mother.

Angelina Jolie adopts a Black child...

Angela...So what does this mean?  The list goes on. But the facts are that in July '05, the actress Angela Jolie adopted a beautiful Ethiopian girl that was abandoned by AIDS.  This is her second child via adoption, her first child came way of  Cambodia.

The larger and more serious picture of this story is that Black people worldwide are dying of AIDS leaving a generation of children to be parented by the gracious and willing.  While I truly admire her actions, I can't help but pray and wonder about us as Black parents.  The facts are that many of are children are abandoned, orphaned and put up for adoption worldwide due to many contributing factors: AIDS, drugs, finances, ignorance etc...

So if we want to continue to contribute to the legacy of Black families raising Black children, we need to step up or more and more other races of "gracious and willing" people will continue to do it for us...

Nonetheless, this is the reality, and the benefits or consequences on Black culture are yet to be seen.

Then again, if White women can corner a market on Black children does this make them a viable and qualified prospect to join the Black family unit in the name of raising lil' Black boys and girls?

I wonder, is this the dream Martin Luther King Jr. was talking about?
