Glory Road: a 9yr-old's perspective

Glory_road_poster_3

Me and my son at the movies
This past Sunday my 9-year-old and I went to the movies see  "Glory  Road." Although I heard it was a good movie, I was kinda skeptical simply because it was a Disney production--my bad. It was off the hinges!

Beautifully, it told the story of a rookie White Coach Don Haskins who recruited and started a line-up of Black players in a Division 1 school, Texas Western in 1966.

All I'm going to say about the flick is "Go see it." It's all that.  And stay for the COMPLETE CREDITS because they roll some real footage and interviews from the coach and other surviving players.  (Pat Riley even gave his 2 cents because he played against them)...

Aunt Jemima or Entreprenuer

Jemima QueenQueen Latifah: The New Aunt Jemima?

I was puzzled frankly when Queen Latifah did the movie  "Bringing Down the House"with Steve Martin.  She pulled every stereotype of a black woman possible in the movie. She was loud, big and ghetto.  Instead of feeling happy that she had--and is getting--plenty movie roles I was left wondering, "okay but at what cost?"

She has done one movie after another, Shampoo excluded, where she takes on roles that are flagrantly racist, and are outright black woman bashing on the sotto vocce.  Like many I loved her style, her presence and voice.  She had a dignity about her that I loved.  I can even enjoy her Covergirl ads though for obvious reasons, she is not the perfect covergirl and doesn't fit that role at all. But "Hollow Wood" is not listening to our need to pick our own representations...

King Kong: On the Verge?...

Kong2

Let’s keep it real: When it comes to the classic storyline of King Kong, It’s hard not to correlate the capture and display of the gargantuan gorilla with the historical/social plight and sexual stigmatization of the African-American male, the taboo relationship between Black men & White women, and the Black man’s ultimate consequential fall to the White man for it.

Now, before you accuse me of being “too sensitive” or quick to pull the “race card,” please know that I entered the flick with a very high tolerance toward the blatant symbolism and similarities--really.  I mean I had to if I were to enjoy it with my 9-year-old son. But yo: A brotha can only take so much.

I mean damn,  even Ray Charles would agree after watching nearly 3 hours of Kong big pimping and getting hated on: King Kong is Black!

Usher's new movie, "In the MIx"

Usher_1I mean, HOT DAMN!  As if Bodyguard with Whitney Houston wasn't excruciating enough...Now we gotta sit back and watch our boy Usher kick it like Willis and Arnold Jackson with the next rich white counterpart in his new movie "In the Mix"
What's next, Halle Berry and Robert Downet Jr.? (My bad. That already happened in 2003 with "Gothika"...)

As much as I like Usher as an artist, I hate the fact that he sold out to do a movie with a weak ass storyline portraying the cliche "Protector-Protectee Fall in Love" genre just to appease the mass of his white media fans--I mean, I ain't gonna get any pleasure out of this. Are you?

In fact, as a DJ I'm banning the play of all Usher cuts until the movie drops off the big screen.  And even still, I'm going to boycott the viewing of this one.

Basically, I'm "On the Verge" and I'm not trying to cross the brink...And Usher doesn't seem to be helping my cause right now.

It really infuriates me to see such a cheesy film hit the screen.  We all know the story, he and her have some combining of their worlds encounter and then they fall in love despite the polarities of their friends, lifestyles and race.

I'd rather watch "Waiting to Exhale" and drink some runny ass sour cream through a licorice stick....
