First of all, I tip because it’s customary.  Second of all, I tip because good service deserves it.  Thirdly, I tip because I can afford to do so…

Although I tip respectfully, it’s impossible for me to tip without the very careful thought of, “How much should I tip?”  Yes, I know what’s “reasonable,” what’s “fair,” and what’s “generous.” However when my waiter is White I feel like the service to a me as a Black man  (even toward a group of me(s)..) purposely varies.  So, as a result, so does my tipping range.

I could be wrong, but I think that a lot (not all) of waiters and waitresses work for tips and they have ways of showing disapproval when they feel slighted by a customer.  Often times they express their disappointment prematurely by providing less than “quality” service compared to other nearby patrons.  Too many times I’ve sat at a table or even stood at a bar for longer than I felt necessary while I watched others around me get much better service...

Much like Kevin Powell, my home was absent of a father and I only went to college because my mother gave me 2 options:  go to college or get out!

Because she was educated herself, she had a hard time understanding why I'd do anything different. Additionally she could not relate to the gravitational pull of the streets and my hommies--nor did she care.

Present at 34 years of age, I can see the wisdom in her ways and I can also see her limits.  I can't fault her though.  She is a woman, my mother and father all in one.  The only thing she isn't is a man.

I swear it seemed like me and my twin brother had to figure the smallest things out: shaving, money management, how to tie a tie, women (still working on that one)...

Now, I lecture my son on these things.  He's 9-years-old and every speech begins the same, "Blood, your 9.  Meaning: You're half way grown."...

Ah'ight.  P said I spoke on the "Pink Elephant" in my previous post.  But now I'm going to speak on the "Florescent Green Orangutan" chillin in the corner with the light blue FUBU jersey.  Yup, White dudes with Dreads, dreadlocks, locks or whatever you want to call them.  I have a female friend who calls them "Mad-locks."

I really don't know where this topic fits in my blog, but I'm going to fit it...

To keep it simple, I've always felt like we as African-Americans have a challenging road to travel when it comes to defining our culture in a unique fashion.  In many ways we had to re-create our culture, salvage it, research it, and even start from scratch.  Nonetheless, we've been creative and successful in setting trends and implementing cultural lifestyle.

Now, I live on this land-locked island adjacent to the Oakland rainforest called "Berkeley." So I have a feeling that my sightings of White people with dreadlocks might be overwhelmingly lopsided compared to other North American bungalows...

This weekend I ran into CBBW #1 at the local club and I decided to break the trend of our smugness.  It just so happened that we were talking to the same circle of people, however she conveniently kept her back to me and avoided eye contact outside of a phony "Hi" lip sync. 

After a few minutes I unable to ignore her the same, plus I was really getting irritated by her refusal to acknowledge me.  But I think it was more so that we were acting like children.  So I gripped her waist with my left hand and whispered in her ear, "Is it just me, but why is it that we can't just be friendly?"

I admit that I said it with a slight attitude in my tone, but my intentions were grown.  Still, I can't say I was ready for her reaction...

Names and Connotations

“This couldn’t be right,” I thought as I looked at the roll sheet.  This ain’t nobody’s real name.  Ah hell no, “Courvoisier?”

“Here,” he said. 

I was stunned.  Somebody actually named him after a cognac.  Yeah, Courvoisier was somebody’s name way before it became a cognac and I’m sure that somewhere in France there is a Courvoisier kickin’ it somewhere… But not in Jr High in Richmond, CA.  Say it ain’t so. 

I mean, that’s like naming your kid “Jesus.” Black people don’t do that. Courvoisier?  C’mon.

2 weeks later I got a new student on my roll sheet “No,” I thought.  “Hell to the nah.”  What is going on?

“Lukeemiah,” I called...

Grown Ass Black Woman…Sucking Her Thumb

True Story: So I’m driving ever so slowly in the thick of morning traffic and I look over to my right and I see this grown ass Sista’ sitting behind the wheel with this frozen dumb stare, with her tongue half-way spilling out her mouth and sucking on her thumb.

It looked so bad all I could do is shake my head in pity…And you know how you can feel somebody looking at you? Well, I looked and shook my head enough for her to turn and see my disapproval.  And when she saw me shaking my head with a sneer on my face,she exploded!  I mean, she was jumping up and down and aggressively yelling at me...

Black Women Who Only Date White Men

I can appreciate the fact that people date who they like, but what I find annoying and shallow is a person who prefers to date another race other than the one they belong to.

Although I’m not an expert, pre-supposed dating outside one’s race sends a self-hate image that I find hard to tolerate. More specifically, it really stands out to me when I see Black women date White dude after White dude in the midst of a sea of Black men.

I’m all for anyone finding happiness, but what I question is the ability to love if you can’t find it in yourself first.

Black Women and Dairy Products

Ah'ight this might be random--or just personal.  But I hate creamy dairy products like sour cream, cream cheese, or anything close to those colors and consistencies. 

It all started in the early 90's when I tried sour cream for the first time.  To say the least, I found it disgusting.  Interestingly enough, soon after that,  I went on the whole vegan kick for a few years and it seemed to enhance my disgust for dairy products overall--cheese included. 

And now--to this moment--it's nothing more disgusting than a Black woman smackin' on some cream cheese.  It's just nasty.  It doesn't look nice.  It unhealthy--YUK!

Trust me, you are better off without it.

Sistas with "Restricted" telephone numbers

So I met this nice young beautiful sista about 2 years ago and she continues calls me every now and then from a restricted number.  Now when I say "every now and then," I mean she calls like no more than once a month--sometimes 4-6 months apart.
Because she has not offered me her number and her number always displays as "Restricted" on my cell phone, I don't  ask her for her number.  Basically, it seems rather obvious that she doesn't do that.
So when she calls we always have a pleasant and stimulating conversation.  We even talk about going out for some eat or drink too (right...)
I did bring the issue up to her that our "correspondence was very one sided."
She asked, "How is that?"
Then I simply asked her, "Why did you call me?"
And then she said, "Because I wanted to."
Then I replied, "That must be nice to be able to do."
She just laughed it off, but I failed to see the humor in it.  Now, for my study of Sistas with "Blocked" telephone numbers, I will keep my cell phone to my ear and record how many times she calls and when.  Perhaps this will reveal more insight to this phenomenonic pattern.

Today Thursday October 24th, she called and 3:30pm.  I didn't know who it was so I let it go to voice mail and she said she'd call again later....
