On the Verge of Dating White Girls

Dreads, Blackness and Google

For 10 years I've sported a full head of dreadlocks and for 10 years I've encountered Sista after Sista that assumed that I date White girls or at least "look like" I do.

The reality of it is that I haven't dated a White girl in the last 10 years plus.  Not only that, I don't even think a White girl has looked my way or at least made it known that she was peeping me.

Now sure, I've seen a gang of Black men with dreads walking with a White Girl, but so.  I mean, does that mean that all Black men with dreads are more than likely exclusively into or prefer White women?

I don't think so. 

Personally, I think of my dreads as an expression of my Blackness. It doesn't mean that I'm not open minded, nor do my dreads mean that I'm racist toward other people without dreads. My expression of dreadlocks just means: I dig the fact that hair can do what it does.

I'm just saying, I thought dreads was an immediate association with Blackness, Black Hair, Africa, Jamaica, Rasta, etc... I guess Google has other ideas.

This weekend I ran into CBBW #1 at the local club and I decided to break the trend of our smugness.  It just so happened that we were talking to the same circle of people, however she conveniently kept her back to me and avoided eye contact outside of a phony "Hi" lip sync. 

After a few minutes I unable to ignore her the same, plus I was really getting irritated by her refusal to acknowledge me.  But I think it was more so that we were acting like children.  So I gripped her waist with my left hand and whispered in her ear, "Is it just me, but why is it that we can't just be friendly?"

I admit that I said it with a slight attitude in my tone, but my intentions were grown.  Still, I can't say I was ready for her reaction...

Octavia E. Butler: A Job Well Done

My first experience of Octavia Butler came via her novel, "Kindred." It was the first book I ever bought twice just to have a pristine copy in my library.

In brief, "Kindred" was about an Black woman's ongoing backward time travels, in which she would repeatedly return to protect the life of her White Slave Owner Ancestor in order for secure her own future existence. 

The concept of "Kindred" forever opened me up to the unique path of my present day African-American lineage...

Thanks to her book I was able to appreciate the historic culmination of races that have resulted into my self-defined American identify that I respectfully refer to as: Black.

Overall her prolific pioneering career as an African-American Science Fiction Writer is monumental in the mention of both Black and Women History.

So I'm on the train and I can't help but over hear this very loud conversation between these 3 youngstas. At first I thought they were arguing.  But when I listened a bit closer, I saw that they weren't  arguing, they were just having a very passionate discussion about Tupac and what he'd be doing if he were still alive today.  Immediately, it came off as humorous. But I gotta admit they offered some really stimulating possibilities to ponder about...

Damn Dre, is this the secrete of your musical genius?  I'm just wondering where y'all met.  Was it Inglewood or Compton?  Perhaps a Sistah would be hard pressed to support you at your side while you dog them out with club bangers that constantly refer to them as "Bitches." 

Take my advice, you gotta switch it up like Snoop.  He'll call them "bitch" and then call them "beautiful" on the same album...And he's married to a Sista.  That's how you do it my man.

"He-motions" by TD Jakes

So I'm reading this book and it's hitting me in all the right places.  I've read some TD Jakes before and I like it that dude comes from a sound spiritual angle--yeah I'm spiritual too.

Although the book title sounds like a "male-healing" type of handbook, the sub-title is "Strength for Men, Solutions for Women." Sistas, that means you too.

Basically, I want to invite us all on "The Verge" to read the book together and perhaps we can have  some dialog and solutions for "The Verge."

I plan on finishing the book March 6th  actually, I'll make that March 13th. I want to make sure that we all get a chance to get it and read it.  Got it? Good.

I’ve always been a believer that the breed and personality of a dog can reflect the essence of their owner.  Additionally, dogs don’t just compliment image, they can also be a practical component to your environment or lifestyle. Furthermore my philosophy is a dog can’t eat (in my house) for free. Basically, “do something”: bark, patrol, retrieve a duck, win a race, find somebody, chase cats, rats or detour raccoons and robbers…something.  This is how I see dogs.  Plus where I come from the Bichon Frise wasn’t too popular and the homes in my hood didn’t exude the elegance of Afghans and it's easy to see why.

On that note, I grew up in an exotic part of the western hemisphere that was more heard of than visited. The environment consisted of trees, concrete, broken glass and steel.  To say the least, if you lived in Oakland, versatility in your dog was a plus. And from what I learned and witnessed, the "practical" dog of choice was the ghetto bred Pit Bull…
