There are very thin lines between the areas of acceptable, judgemendtal, and out right disgusting. Basically, we all know the dangers of smoking, and it’s your business if you choose to do so.
Some people tolorate it amoungst their the mates while others don’t. But when it comes to menthol cigarettes, I personally got to draw the line.
The way I see it, menthol cigarettes are a step over and beyond mere cigarette smoking. Not only are they a stretch of taste from your average tobacco cigarette, they are considerably more dangerous than your average Camel or Marlboro etc. Lastly, they are directly and effectively marketed to the overall Black community—Women, Men and children.
Did you know that cigarette advertising has been banned from television since 1971? But if you open up Essence, don’t be surprised if you find an advertisement of a Black couple blissfully walking through the park smoking a Newport or Kool cigarette.
If anything, this blog is a plea to inform our community of the blatant poison that the menthol cigarette industry has targeted us with. In “Essence,” cigarette smoking is not “Kool” for any of us, especially when I see a beautiful sister puffing on one (puns intended).
